PSD2 directive for even more secure payment

The Directive of the European Union - PSD2 (eng. Payment Service Directive), among other things, extremely strives to improve the security of electronic payment methods.

Whether it is a card payment at a physical point of sale or via the Internet, it is necessary to carry out a stronger verification of the client's identity.

Zapad banka payment cards provide the highest level of security when it comes to the use of cards on devices that support "chip" technology, and the purchase needs to be additionally confirmed with a PIN code.

In the case of contactless payment at a physical point of sale (POS) for all purchases up to 50 EUR, it is sufficient to bring the payment card closer to the POS device, while in the case of purchases above 50 EUR, the transaction must be confirmed with a PIN code. In exceptional cases, a contactless transaction must be authorized with a PIN code and in the case of smaller amounts.

When paying over the Internet, if the Internet point of sale supports the 3D Secure program, it is necessary to perform "Strong Customer Authentication". Client authentication is performed using one of two methods:

3D Secure:

User authentication via SMS/Viber message (OTP code):

Client authentication is performed by entering a dynamic password (OTP code) that the Client receives via SMS/Viber message. By entering the received OTP code, on the dedicated page, which opens when initiating Internet transactions, the client's authentication is considered successful. This type of authentication is applied in the event when the payment card used when initiating an Internet transaction is not registered for the use of the "Zapad Secure" service.

3D Secure 2:

Client authentication via Zapad Secure service:

If the Internet transaction is initiated by a Payment card that is registered for the use of the Zapad Secure service, Client authentication will be performed as follows:

  • On the device that is connected to the Zapad Secure service Client receives a push notification with transaction details;
  • Client opens the notification and performs Biometric authentication on his/her device;
  • With successful Biometric authentication, it is considered that the Authentication is successful.
